I believe in a classroom environment that develops the whole student, through instruction that focuses on their skills.
To begin my understanding of my own educational philosophies I took a self-evaluation via the Oregon State Educational Philosophies. Upon completion of the assessment tool it was determined that I support educational philosophies that Behaviorism and Humanism over other philosophies.
Behaviorists believe that in education, students learning is shaped by design and determined by forces in environment. Learning occurs as result of reinforcing responses to stimuli.
Similarly, Humanists feel that teachers should establish the environmental conditions that allow students personal freedom, choice, responsibility. Student achievement will be developed through their own motivation as they work towards their highest levels. Students need to control their own destiny. Classroom should be child centered. Students will have interaction with others.
The National Council for Social Studies states that "the primary purpose of social studies is to help young people make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world. " (NCSS, 1994). This quote is how I envision social studies should be taught to my students. As a classroom teacher, who will teach Social Studies, it is my responsibility to bring engaging, interactive curriculum to become meaningful for my students.
